Political Correctness

Die 1976 in Wien geborene Künstlerin Tanja Boukal stellt den Menschen in den Mittelpunkt ihres Werkes. Wie er sich in seinem gesellschaftlichen, politischen wie räumlichen Umfeld bewegt, interessiert die Künstlerin ebenso wie sein Umgang mit außergewöhnlichen Situationen. Sie richtet den Blick vor allem auf Menschen, die normalerweise nicht im Mittelpunkt stehen, durch ihr oft unbemerktes Handeln aber dennoch vieles bewirken.

Seit Mitte der 1990er-Jahre arbeitet Boukal, beeinflusst von ihrer Ausbildung als Bühnenbildnerin und Kunststickerin, vor allem im Bereich der Plastik und Installation. Seit einigen Jahren nutzt sie die Fotografie als Basis für ihre Arbeiten. Als Zeichen der Bedeutsamkeit der von ihr dargestellten Menschen verwendet sie seit 2007 zunehmend aufwendige Handwerkstechniken wie Stricken, Sticken, Häkeln und Nähen. Wenn sie hierfür Maschinen einsetzt, versteht sie diese als Entlastund und Unterstützung und nicht als Ersatz für ihre Hände; die entsprechenden Programme schreibt sie selbst. Die Haptik der Materialien ist für die Künstlerin ebenso wichtig wie eine die Betrachter_innen einbeziehende Installation.

Der Katalog Tanja Boukal. Political Correctness stellt eine Auswahl von Werken der Künstlerin vor, die seit 2007 entstanden sind und im Rahmen der gleichnamigen Ausstellung im Museum der Moderne Salzburg 2013 präsentiert wurden.

At the center of the work of artist Tanja Boukal, born in Vienna in 1976, are people. She is interested in how people move in their social, political, as well as regional environments and also how they deal with extraordinary situations. Her gaze turns mainlo to those people who are not normally in the limelight, but who nonetheless make a great impact through their often unnoticed actions.

Influenced by her education as a stage designer and embroidery artist, Boukal has worked primarily
in the areas of sculpture and installation since the mid-1990s. She has used photography as a basis for her works for several years. To signify the importance of the people whom she depicts, the artist has increasingly employed elaborate arts-and-crafts techniques such as knitting, embroidery, crochet, and sewing since 2007. She considers the use of machines as relief and support rather than replacement for her hands; and she writes all relevant programs herself. For Boukal, equally important are the feel of the materials and an installation that draws in beholders.

The catalogue Tanja Boukal. Political Correctness presents a selection of the artist's works that have been created since 2007 and were shown in the context of the eponymous exhibition at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg in 2013.
