Beschreibung

Since the 1990s, the British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA (1962, London, GB) has been developing sumptuously executed sculptures and installations, colourful collages and staged photographs and films. For these, he likes to use the zeitgeist and fashion of the Victorian Era as a historical resonance chamber in order to point out colonial interconnections, entanglements, world views and power structures and to question these with subtle irony. By means of hybrid self-fashioning, theatrical stagings of decadent aristocratic amusements and the stylistic device of social satire, Shonibare brilliantly deconstructs the impact of colonialism on role models and cultural identities, on the cartographic and symbolic representation of the world and the shaping of stereotypical images of humanity. This catalogue accompanies the major solo exhibition Yinka Shonibare CBE. End of Empire at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and documents three decades of artistic work.
