Elfriede Mejchar (1924-2020) is one of the most important personalities in Austrian photography. Her diverse work spans more than half a century, from the late 1940s to the 21st century. On May 10, 2024, the Austrian photographer would have turned 100 years old.
Elfriede Mejchar is at home as a photographer where city and country, light and shadow, dirt and beauty collide. In her pictures she lets forgotten landscapes, places and things appear in a new light: inconspicuous urban outskirts and dilapidated industrial areas, out-of-date hotel rooms, barns and huts, scarecrows, portraits and, time and again, flowers between blooming and wilting.
