Fiona Tan
With the other hand
Description
Fiona Tan has held a central position within contemporary art for more than twenty years. Her cinematic and photographic works are known from numerous important international biennials and exhibitions. Tan's work explores the contested territory of representation as well as history and time and our place in it. In a world increasingly shaped by a global culture, they testify to the artist's strong fascination with the mutability of identities, the deceptive nature of representation, and the play of memory across the boundaries of space and time.
This two-volume publication is being published on the occasion of the artist's first comprehensive mid-career retrospective, which is being presented almost simultaneously at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and the Kunsthalle Krems. The colorfully illustrated exhibition catalog discusses the works chosen from two decades and includes the newly commissioned video works Gray Glass and Pickpockets as well as three essays and an interview with the artist. The second volume is a reader and brings together a selection of the most important texts on Fiona Tan's oeuvre: by the artist herself and by well-known international curators, art critics and authors.
Edited by Thorsten Sadowsky for the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and Florian Steininger for the Kunsthalle Krems

Fiona Tan has occupied a pivotal position within contemporary art since the late 1990s; her moving-image and photographic artworks are familiar from many key international biennials and exhibitions. Tan explores history and time as well as our place within them, working within the contested territory of representation. This two-volume publication marks the occasion of Tan's first extensive mid-career retrospective, presented concurrently at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and Kunsthalle Krems. The exhibition catalog discusses the works drawn from two decades shown across both venues, including the newly commissioned video works Gray Glass and Pickpockets . Illustrated in full colour, it comprises three essays and a conversation with the artist.
