Stepping Out! Female Identities in Chinese Contemporary Art

Stepping Out! Female Identities in Chinese Contemporary Art is the first book and exhibition in twenty-five years to present a broadly representative selection of works by China’s contemporary women artists. Since the late 1980s, they have been stepping out of the shadow cast by their male colleagues—who largely dominate contemporary Chinese art—with a consistently open and occasionally provocative attitude. In the tense field occupied by tradition, ideology, and upheaval, the twenty-six selected artists investigate and unsparingly reveal personal and social fears, contradictions, and hopes. Their works demand equal rights, question traditional roles and forms of representation, and break taboos in order to bring current social and gender issues self-confidently before the public eye.
