End Of Empire

Description

The British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA (1962 London, GB) has been developing opulently executed sculptures and installations, colorful collages and staged photographs and films since the 1990s. To this end, he prefers to use the zeitgeist and fashion of the Victorian age as a historical resonance chamber in order to show colonial connections, entanglements, worldviews and power structures and to question them with subtle irony. Shonibare masterfully deconstructs the influence of colonialism on role models and cultural identities, on the cartographic and symbolic representation of the world and the development of stereotypical images of people through hybrid self-designs, theatrical stagings of decadent aristocratic pleasures and the stylistic device of social satire. This catalog accompanies the large exhibition of Yinka Shonibare CBE. End of Empire at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and documents three decades of artistic creativity.

Since the 1990s, the British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA (1962, London, GB) has been developing sumptuously executed sculptures and installations, colorful collages and staged photographs and films. For these, he likes to use the zeitgeist and fashion of the Victorian Era as a historical resonance chamber in order to point out colonial interconnections, entanglements, world views and power structures and to question these with subtle irony. By means of hybrid self-fashioning, theatrical stagings of decadent aristocratic amusements and the stylistic device of social satire, Shonibare brilliantly deconstructs the impact of colonialism on role models and cultural identities, on the cartographic and symbolic representation of the world and the shaping of stereotypical images of humanity. This catalog accompanies the major solo exhibition Yinka Shonibare CBE. End of Empire at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and documents three decades of artistic work.
